11th of September 1893, Parliament of Religion was organised in conjunction with Columbian exposition to commemorate quatercentenary of Columbus’s landing in America Art Institute of Chicago, USAThe Parliament opened with international representatives of the world's religions present. An Indian delegate, Swami Vivekananda, riveted the audience with his call for religious tolerance and an end to fanaticism. Over the next several weeks, thousands of attendees came to hear Swami Vivekananda and other leaders speak, making the Parliament a watershed moment in interfaith dialogue.‘Universal Brotherhood Day’ is celebrated by Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari to commemorate the epoch making speech of Swami Vivekananda at Chicago. This assumes more significance at a time when we see civil unrest, and religious fundamentalism has evolved to a stage that it appears to be threatening the very existence civil society. Hence, it has become a necessity to reassert the unparalleled synthesis that we call ‘BHARAT’.
